a small look
at something big.
i am here . . .
Bright lights, brilliant leaves,
busy streets, traffic jams, blue
sky, crowded subways - the
smell, the taste, the sound, the
feeling of coming to college in
Photographers, artists, college students, activists, doctors,
historians, musicians, taxi drivers, venders, socialites, politi-
cians, professors, construction workers, tourists, commuters,
the homeless - thrown into this diverse mass, college students
find that they're part of a new environment - a place that
accepts all people and all cultures. A milieu that encourages
growth of an individual ... to find out who she is; to find her
voice; to leave her legacy.
where it all begins . . .
She felt tiny and insignificant
to the size and grandeur of the
city and all its inhabitants.
Ever heard the saying, "Today
is the first day of the rest of
your life?" That is how she felt
that day, ready to find new

She is a woman . . . your
best friend and the girl you
have never gotten to know.
She lives on your floor and
across campus. She is from
the country, the city and the
world abroad. She plays on
the teams, hangs out at Java
City and eats at Bartol. She
is the girl you see in a towel
in the hall and the one who
flirts with the public safety
officer. She is a Simmons
woman. She is me, she is
you . . . she is everyone.
She goes out to explore . . .
to begin her journey. Though
her destination is unclear, she
searches for something - for
to make her realize that this is
She finds solitude in her new
environment. A movie at
Quadside, procrastinating at
Bartol, a heart to heart on the
quad, late nights in the library,
and listening to Magic 106.7 at
the gym personalizes her little
home in this expansive city.
She is comforted.
And just as life started to seem a little easier, classes begin.
A whole new set of unanswered questions bombard her
falsified feelings of security as she walks through the front
door of the Main College Building. Which way is east?
Where is the coffee? What does L stand for? What is MCB,
oh yeah, riiggghht. Soon the questions are forgotten as she
transforms into the student she is destined to be.
